Developing Commercial Awareness

New skills and attitudes for the contract economy

Developing Commercial Awareness is designed to help individuals develop stronger commercial and business awareness in their team or department, in preparation for contracting or developing new chargeable services. The day introduces participants to tools that will help staff understand how to run services in a commercially aware way. The day can also form part of a wider programme to help develop bids for contracted services.

  • What is commercial awareness and why is it important?: understand the importance of commercial awareness
  • Environmental assessment: use key tools to assess what the major external forces are that impact on your business
  • Identifying your business model: discover a structured way to identify your underlying business model
  • Competitor analysis: a key part of awareness involves analysing and learning from competitors
  • Establishing your competitive advantage: find out what your organisation’s competitive advantage is and how it adds value
  • Identifying key offerings: how do you establish what services and offerings might have commercial value?
  • Pricing and costing offerings: discover the key methods to price and cost activities and work out which to achieve
  • Developing a business plan: establish what the key elements of a business plan are

Learning approaches

The programme uses case studies and practical activities to help relate the material to your own situation. =mc consultants will also use examples of income generation and commercial awareness form our consultancy work.
