My areas of expertise:

  • strategic and business planning
  • innovation
  • organisational change
  • fundraising reviews
  • advocacy campaigning
  • Corporate Social Responsibility

At the moment

I have the pleasure of working with Age UK, the recent merger of Help the Aged and Age Concern, to review their fundraising operations post-merger and develop a campaign that will take them into the top ranks of fundraising charities in the UK. So, a bit of change work here in addition to the fundraising piece.

Because variety is the spice of life, I'm also working with WaterAid to lay the foundations for a strong innovation programme that will bring new ideas to the problem of providing clean water in rural Africa. Oh, and I'm also helping several organisations write business plans – from a new mental health charity to a retail review for a chain of charity shops.

Before =mc

I followed my passion for environmental policy into a career that took me to several large environmental not-for-profits in the United States, including World Wildlife Fund and American Rivers. As a Director at American Rivers, I put my MBA in not-for-profit management to use to reinvigorate one of the core programmes, increasing its fundraised income by over 300%, developing a new strategic plan and helping to pass major environmental protection legislation in the US Congress.

After that, I decided to cross the pond and work with an international sustainability marketing consultancy (part of Aegis Media) where I designed and implemented organisation-wide sustainability programmes, including international product marketing campaigns, for Fortune 500 companies. So, I bring both for-profit and not-for-profit management skills to the table for our clients!

We've used the =mc team to help frame and resolve several major strategic issues for us at the Red Cross and the wider networks we're involved in. With them you can be sure of a mixture of clear and critical thinking – plus that essential added extra value of creativity.

Mark Astarita, Director of Fundraising, British Red Cross

=mc has a wealth and breadth of knowledge, a terrific understanding and vast experience of the ethos and culture of the not-for-profit sector. This together with their 'anything is possible' approach made =mc an obvious choice for the RNLI to partner with, to develop and deliver in-house training for our staff.

Marie Smith, Training and Development Manager, RNLI
