At the moment
I'm working on fundraising strategy development for The Netherlands Mama Cash foundation. This is part of a larger piece of work for that included a review, in 2009, of the foundation's individual and major donor programmes.
I'm also completing a comprehensive fundraising appeal review for the Salvation Army which involves benchmarking them against a number of successful appeals.
In 2009 I worked on a report on the feasibility of a UNAIDS fundraising initiative in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. I'm fascinated by the dynamics involved in fundraising in this region and I hope to work on further MENA related projects in 2010. In the meantime I've begun the process of learning Arabic.
Before =mc
I worked in a number of great (and varied) positions in the first few years after graduating from Trinity College Dublin – ranging from selling buttons in Chicago to teaching the Irish language. I really began on my path to =mc after completing a post-graduate course at the Smurfit Business School, Dublin.
A role as Marketing Executive at a software company was quickly followed by a hands-on position as Business Manager in a small firm in Alberta, Canada. A move to the UK followed and I was delighted to find myself back in the world of higher education, this time with appointments first in alumni relations and then in fundraising for the University of London. My final position before beginning with =mc was as Development Manager working exclusively with major donors.
I consider myself fortunate to have had the opportunity to work in for-profit and not-for-profit organisations. In my experience many of the best practice guidelines relating to strategy development, income generation and managing internal/external relationships apply to both sectors. Taking this from an academic level and using it to address the real challenges value driven organisations face is what makes this job worth while.
